How to Recruit in Chaos Front
Buy people before you buy a titan you cannot start.
Chaos Front sells the fantasy of seventy machines and then quietly reminds you that machines need names. More than one hundred important characters exist: commanders, staff officers, merchants, pirates, scientists, psychics, robots, and aliens. Recruitment is how a mercenary corps stops being a demo stack of three light mecha. Read this with the character hub and talents.
Who you are hiring
Captains belong on ships. Pilots belong in mecha and fighters. Psychics and lab-enhanced humans show up because ARMS and psionics are part of the late kit, not because the game randomly grew a mage class. A merchant might be a shop key. A staff officer might be a proposal key. Do not filter the roster as “only people who shoot.”
Hongyu’s screenshots already show named Gan-court faces and Three Kingdoms-style officers standing in the same list as original portraits. Lycurgus brings celebrity gravity and a crew that includes people like Helen on the opening hull. The protagonists page is the story split; this page is the hiring split.
Where they appear
Story missions hand you companions. Ports and Mission Centers offer hireables after fights. Some characters join because you sided with their faction; some refuse because you rammed their cousin. There is no public API of every join flag on launch week. If an officer has a unique talent, talk to them before you leave the planet.
Collection tracks Members as a cap (store art shows 42/42). That is a museum count, not a field limit. You still choose who sorties. Bench with a purpose.
Talents beat extra steel
Melee frames want Fencer, Kung Fu Master, or Lone Wolf if you care about parry. Assassin ranks feed instakill rolls on wounded targets. Identity talents and combat skills are why two identical Destroyer chassis feel different. If you only read unit names on the mecha list, you will mis-hire.
Still Water and Spirit are examples of skills that force melee parries. Deflecting Blow and Kungfu live on certain melee mechs. Pair the person to the toy. Pairing the other way is how you waste gold.
A hiring budget
- After the prologue, hire one extra pilot before a second battleship.
- Keep a captain who can survive a ram if your mothership is the win condition.
- Save a slot for a unique story officer even if their stats look mid.
- Do not sell a psychic because the early maps are all shells and missiles.
- Revisit Trusted factions; exclusive ARMS want compatible people.
Gold spent on a hull without EN, morale, or a pilot is a wall ornament. Star rank on the ending checklist cares that you can still fight in C.E.29, not that the hangar screenshot is full.
How to find people without a wiki dump
Talk to named NPCs after missions. Check Manage when the map banner changes. If a Three Kingdoms-named officer is in your list, open their card before you assume they are a cameo. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a stated influence; some of those names are doing real work.
If you cannot afford someone, take a repeatable campaign battle, not a unique mission you might need for endings. If you cannot win the battle, fix combat instead of rage-buying a titan.
Common traps
- Hiring only pretty portraits.
- Leaving the mothership under-captained.
- Ignoring merchants and staff because they are not aces.
- Over-cap shopping while unique officers expire on a timed planet.
- Building a melee team with zero parry talents.
Recruitment is the quiet skill of Chaos Front. The loud skill is ram. You need both to leave Centersea with a true ending instead of a calendar lecture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from the launch build and official notes.
Is there a full character roster on this wiki yet?
Launch week lists roles and named leads, not a leaked 100-person table. Use in-game collection plus the character hub while we add confirmed cards.
Should I recruit before buying units?
Usually yes. Empty frames do not sortie well. See getting started for the first-hour shop rule.
Do psychics matter early?
They matter more as ARMS and late story show up. Do not delete one because the tutorial was all missiles.
Can I recruit the other protagonist's cast?
The campaigns share a galaxy but keep many missions distinct. Do not expect Hongyu's court to walk onto a Lycurgus demo save.
